A Nice Mix of Warblers at Magee - 05 May 2025

Heavy clouds and a light rain fell as I drove to Magee Marsh this morning. I arrived shortly after 7:30 am and found cool temperatures (49F) but cessation of rain. The parking lot was already half-filled with cars so the boardwalk would be busy today.

This Black-throated Green Warbler appeared immediately as I stepped onto the boardwalk from the east parking lot. At eye-level it provided many quick photos in low light (ISO 51,000).

Just a few minutes later I ran into Patricia Rydzewski. We hugged and walked the boardwalk together catching up on recent happenings. Black-throated Blue Warblers would make several appearances this morning and we managed a few quick photos through the brush.

House Wrens were actively nesting and chasing each other through the brush next to the boardwalk.

We spotted a semi-cooperative Northern Parula

A small crowd gathered at the big loop as a singing Prothonotary Warbler put on a show at eye level and below.

Northern Waterthrush were plentiful today. I counted 7 singing birds though we only saw perhaps three total.

As we reached the west parking lot a handsome male American Redstart sang loudly and finally posed for a few photos.

We backtracked to the big loop and found a Green Heron foraging below the boardwalk to our right while yet another Northern Waterthrush sang across the channel.

A Gray Catbird posed in a gap in the vines.

Chestnut-sided Warblers were being seen but they were high in the canopy or buried in the trees. We spent a good amount of time trying to photograph this one.

A Magnolia Warbler was even more difficult to see, yet alone try to photograph. While chasing this guy I kept hearing a White-eyed Vireo but couldn't locate it.

This Veery popped out onto the marsh floor for a moment and quickly disappeared.

Another American Redstart got our attention back at the east entrance.

As Pat was catching up with Ken Schmidt I walked back to the entrance and found a handsome Cape May Warbler foraging at eye level. It put on quite a show for the growing crowd that gathered at the entrance to the boardwalk.

I'd take my leave and head home at about 10:30 am. I may have to return tomorrow or Wednesday. That was fun!
