Foggy Morning @ Magee - 07 May 2025
Skies were clear this morning in SE Michigan so I planned to drive to NW Ohio to Magee Marsh to check out the boardwalk. As soon as I reached the Ohio border the skies turned to fog, then clouds. It would remain that way at a 48F temperature.
The parking lot was full at 9 am when I arrived. I parked at the very east end, and as soon as I got out of the car I heard the distinct "Chick-burrio-Chick" of a White-eyed Vireo. Folks were already on it so now it was a matter of getting focus on the bird through the fog.
The boardwalk was crowded with small pockets of birders; they outnumbered the birds 2:1. Of the birds that were around most were Yellow Warblers.
The rest of the warbler world was foraging at tree tops away from the boardwalk. There was little action next to the boardwalk and nothing of note at eye-level. This Palm Warbler was seen in a hole through the vegetation.
Near the end of the big loop a Northern Parula was foraging over the swamp and permitted a few quick pics. A Prothonotary Warbler was singing loudly from nearby but refused to show.
As I returned to the car a Blue-headed Vireo was spotted next to a Magnolia Warbler and Black-throated Green Warbler.
I then headed to the Estuary Trail and found a female Purple Finch foraging high up in the trees.
At the beach head a pair of Cape May Warblers were feeding in the Honeysuckle that grew along the beach.
The Estuary Trail was active with Warbling Vireos and Nashville Warblers but most of the birds were Red-winged Blackbirds, Gray Catbirds, and Tree Swallows. At the end of the trail a Northern Waterthrush could be heard singing in the dense brush.
I'd return to find a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak near the Cape May Warbler spot.
