Warblers Starting to Increase - 03 May 2025
Conditions were on the cold side with clouds, sprinkles and 48F when I arrived at Elizabeth Park shortly before 8 am. The woods were quiet as I walked the trails but gradually woke up within the hour.
I heard a Great-crested Flycatcher giving a raspy "WHEEP" from the treetops and could only ID it when it flew. Otherwise it was a dark silhouette against dark skies.
In fact, most all of the birds were difficult to ID due to dark skies. This Ruby-crowned Kinglet was about the only bird that was at eye-level but it was moving so fast through the brush that I could only get a pic or two before it disappeared.
A Carolina Wren was singing loudly near the Maintenance Yard and I managed to find it momentarily.
A small pocket of warblers were found in the oaks along the outside edge of the middle woods. Among them were several Yellow-rumped Warblers and an Orange-crowned Warbler. A Baltimore Oriole flew in, and while scanning it I found an Indigo Bunting quietly sitting in the canopy.
Given the eye strain I walked back toward the center trail and happened upon this Northern Flicker foraging in the grass.
Overhead a pair of Black-throated Green Warblers were heard singing their diagnostic "Zee-zee-zee-zur-zee" call. Among them was a Blackburnian Warbler that stayed high in the canopy and was difficult to photograph.
A pair of Ovenbirds were singing from opposite sides of the woods, and I managed to see one of them fly across the trail ahead of me. I could not relocate it, though in the deep woods.
I did finally get a pic of a Yellow-rumped Warbler as I headed back to the car.
This morning the birds were difficult to find and high in the canopy so photos were difficult to obtain. I'll try again tomorrow...
