Fast Warbler Action @ Elizabeth Park - 06 Sep 2025
I took a ride to Elizabeth Park this morning prior to going to Detroit River Hawk Watch. Skies were mostly clear and it was calm and cool (55ªF).
The island of trees surrounding the maintenance yard and zoo were actually hopping at 8:30 am. Several Bay-breasted Warblers were bouncing around a tree that also had a Blackburnian Warbler, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Black-and-White Warbler, and Black-throated Green Warbler.
A short walk up the path took me to an opening with Jewelweed in bloom and several more warblers. Magnolia Warbler, American Redstart, and this Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
At the north end of the island I ran into American Redstarts and Nashville Warbler.
Doubling back to the main trail I came across a nice Wilson's Warbler and another Black-throated Green Warbler.
Things slowed down and I turned my attention to a White-breasted Nuthatch feeding off the bark and ground next to the main trail.
I didn't stay long and opted to continue on to Lake Erie Metropark.

At about 9:30 am I showed up at the Boat Launch and joined Jo and Andy at the hawk watch. Cumulus clouds were forming over Lake Erie and Gibraltar channels that made viewing optimal but winds were picking up from the SW. In the 2 hours I was there we'd see one Northern Harrier cross Lake Erie to the south.
Local Osprey and Turkey Vultures made fly-overs, but they are not migrating, yet. Note the extensive molt on this guy.
A pair of Great Egrets made a pass near us
and a nice flock of a dozen American White Pelicans were flying against dark clouds to the east. I didn't stay and left to get lunch for home.
