Cold, Rainy, Slow Start of May - 01 May 2026

This morning, under cloudy skies, a cool 42ºF and a light rain I drove to Elizabeth Park in Trenton for a quick walk. I was hoping for some warblers but would have to settle for pics of the locals.

I parked next to the bridge and found a Red-bellied Woodpecker next to the car and working the tree.

The island trails were wet, soft and quiet. My only highlight was running into Greg and Amber Piotter. on the trail just before leaving.

Since it was only 8:15 am I decided to make a quick run to the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Humbug Marsh Unit and walk the short trail. A pair of singing Song Sparrows working the lawn and wooded edge was a nice greeting.

A pair of Northern Flickers were the highlight of this location.

The woods were otherwise somewhat quiet. A Red-winged Blackbird took no notice as I walked by.

An American Robin was tucked in the thickets next to the creek while a Northern Yellow Warbler was the only warbler singing this morning.

The recent habitat restoration has started to show fruits of the labor. Mayapple!
